Saturated With the Wrong Thing

This is our last week in Malawi. I am excited to go…yet…it is bittersweet.   There are things about God everywhere in Lilongwe. Literally. Everywhere. Here are some examples… “99% God’s Plan Mini Shop” “Kingdom Come Barber Shop” “God is Good Bakery” “Jesus Saves Market” “God is Great Restaurant”   The place is saturated with words about God. But the people are not. The people are apathetic and indifferent. Jesus and God are just things that places are named after. There is no...

I am your light, Daughter

“Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, The Lord will be my light.” –Micah 7:8   Last summer, I said this verse while sitting by the still lake, in the middle of the night. It was so dark and the moon was nowhere to be seen. As I finished saying, “the Lord will be my light,” some clouds moved out of the way of the moon, and everything was light. In a moment like that the only thought I can think is, “How stupid have I been? That I used to question wheter there was a God… How...

A New Familiar

I’m going on four weeks here in Lilongwe, Malawi and really enjoying it. At first I was a little hard getting used to not always having running water and limited cooking supplies but the people we have met and relationships we are making are well worth only taking a shower once a week 🙂   So far we have taught classes at an orphanage and spent time worshiping and sharing stories with a group of widows. Also spending time ministering at some local churches that are apart of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Malawi.    God has really been revealing a lot of...

Heart of Steel or Just Something Different

It’s all around us. Trash, children, murky water, corn stalks, chickens, mini buses, pungent odors, street vendors, people shouting…..   Life in Malawi.   I’ve watched my team take in the poverty. I’ve seen them close their eyes to shut it out. I’ve seen them weep over it.   I’ve seen all these emotions. Yet, I could feel none of them.   The poverty here is no different than any other third world country. It is heart wrenching, but it is the same. I tried to cry for the child with no parents crawling along the street...

Before this journal entry I...
